Advocacy Day in Albany, NY
The Coalition of New York State Alzheimer’s Association Chapters holds an annual Advocacy Day in Albany. Chapter staff members, family caregivers, and interested persons travel to Albany to visit with Assembly and Senate New York City representatives. The visits provide an opportunity for family members to tell their stories and speak out on behalf of services for persons with Alzheimer’s, their families, and other caregivers. The visits also provide an opportunity to request support for funding for Chapter education and outreach to the community.

Ceremony of Remembrance
The Ceremony of Remembrance is an interfaith service for caregivers, who attend our support group program, whose relatives have died of complications due to any of the dementias. The Ceremony, held at the Chapel of Hope and Remembrance at the HealthCare Chaplaincy on E. 60th Street, is an opportunity for us to gather together as a community and pay our respects to those we have cared for and to each other.

A light dinner after the Ceremony provides us with more time to be together. The annual Ceremony is important to former group members who look forward to reconnecting with each other every year. It’s inspiring to remember the whole caregiving experience with those who shared it with you and, by all reports, everyone leaves feeling more alive.

Early-Stage Memory Disorders Forum
For people with early-stage AD and other dementias, their family members, caregivers and interested professionals. The Forum is distinguished by the participation of people with early-stage dementia in the planning committee, the forum plenary session and in workshops.

Public Policy Forum

The Alzheimer’s Association Public Policy Forum takes place in Washington DC. Advocates gather from all over the county to hear about the Alzheimer’s Association priority issues, including the need for increased funding for Alzheimer’s research at the National Institutes of Health. There is a schedule of events including a candlelight vigil, workshops on a variety of issues, and visits to each state’s members of Congress to advocate for the priority issues.
