The Junior Committee finished its fall 2005–summer 2006 year on an enthusiastic and productive note. In addition to choosing a new executive committee, members allocated the money they raised this year to both research and NYC Chapter initiatives.

Joining the executive committee as president and vice president, respectively, are Meghann McKale and Christina Shepard. The pair shined as co-chairs of the JC’s 2006 Gala, and Meghann led the Committee to its most successful Memory Walk ever in 2005. Steve Pifferi, a longtime and dedicated member, is the JC’s new secretary, while Tricia Amy, who has impressed everyone with her dedication to both the group and the 2006 Gala, was elected treasurer. Congratulations to the JC’s new leaders!

The Chapter proposal chosen for JC funding this year is the Nursing Home Manual Project, an initiative led by William Senders, Manager of Nursing Home & Residential Care Affairs, who has dedicated his career to improving the quality of life for dementia residents living in residential care settings. The project will put an extensive and detailed manual on transforming nursing home culture into the hands of every home director in New York State. The JC shares in the hope that the manual will eventually find support from a major publisher or pharmaceutical company, especially since the JC has a history of providing initial funding for programs that later find support from even bigger fish! (Notable examples are the Safe Return program and the Special Assistance Fund.) The JC also allocated $5,000 to research initiatives this year, and looks forward to another stellar year of fund raising through Memory Walk 2006, its 2007 Gala, and other events!

If you would like to lend your talents and enthusiasm to Junior Committee activities, please contact Christy Johnson, Chapter Relations Chair, at christy_johnson@post.com for information on membership. Meetings are held the second Wednesday of each month at the NYC Chapter office.
