Reaching out into the community…
a Speakers Bureau update
Here at the NYC Chapter, Speakers Bureau volunteers
provide a service that is at the very heart of our mission.
Trained by the Chapter, they increase public awareness,
educate and inform the community. Volunteers provide
presentations on Alzheimer’s disease and Chapter programs
and services. Many volunteers have direct experience with
a family member or loved one affected by dementia. They
give of their time and energy to help others going through
a similar experience.
Volunteers speak at senior centers, community and faithbased
organizations, clubs, schools and more. They discuss
the differences between normal aging and dementia,
factors likely to affect memory, warning signs, where to
obtain a diagnosis, the stages of Alzheimer’s disease, current
treatments, and where to go for help. At the end of the
presentation, Speakers Bureau audiences have an opportunity
to ask questions, receive informational materials, and
join our mailing list.
In 2006, we exceeded Speakers Bureau goals—a core
group of 13 Speakers Bureau volunteers reached over 900
individuals through 30 speaking engagements in
Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten
Island. In 2007, we look forward to expanding our outreach.
