A New Home for the 7th Annual
Early Stage Memory Disorders Forum

The 7th Annual Early Stage Memory Disorders Forum will be held on Wednesday,April 11, 2007 in a brand new venue: The Roosevelt Hotel, located at Madison Avenue and East 45th Street in Manhattan. This site offers easier access to the Forum location, and a calmer, more intimate environment for the event.

The theme of this year’s Forum is Taking A Closer Look: Reflections on Living with Early Stage Memory Disorders. It will explore the experience of Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders from the perspective of the person who has been diagnosed.

The Planning Committee is pleased to announce that David Shenk, author of The Forgetting—Alzheimer’s: Portrait of an Epidemic, has agreed to be the keynote speaker. Mr. Shenk, a well-known non-fiction author, has indeed taken a closer look at life with a progressive memory disorder in this richly informative and very sensitive book.

Story Corps

A special highlight of this year’s Forum will be the participation of StoryCorps. Founded in 2003, StoryCorps is a national project to instruct and inspire ordinary people to record each others’ stories in sound. Similar to a WPA project of the ’30s, these recorded archives will be housed at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. (You might have seen their recording booths in Grand Central Station and at the World Trade Center site.) Of particular interest to our Forum is that in 2006, StoryCorps launched a special Memory Loss Initiative to reach out to people affected by memory loss and to support and encourage them to share their stories. StoryCorps facilitators will be on hand at this year’s event.

The 7th Annual Forum will also feature a plenary session which will explore the personal challenges people with the diagnosis face every day and afford the audience an opportunity to share the support group experience. There will be a medical session featuring prominent experts in the field of research and treatment. Additionally, participants will be able to choose from six different workshops, including one in Spanish.

The all-day event will be held from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm and includes a continental breakfast and a luncheon. For more information, to register or become a Forum exhibitor, please call 646-744-2997 or click here to register online.
