The annual Early-Stage Memory Disorders Forum will be held on Friday, May 2, 2008. It will return to the Roosevelt Hotel, located at Madison Avenue and East 45th Street in Manhattan. New to this year’s event will be workshops specifically designed for different audiences: early-stage people, professionals and family members. According to the Planning Committee, experience has shown that each group comes to an issue with its own set of needs and its own idea of what it wants to take away.

Now in its eighth year, the Early-Stage Memory Disorders Forum remains dedicated to expanding Alzheimer’s awareness and diminishing the stigma associated with the disease. The event provides a venue where early-stage people can come together to network with each other and have their concerns be heard by caregivers and the rest of the Alzheimer’s community.

The theme of this year’s Forum is For the Record: Sharing the Past, Living the Present. It will explore the value of preserving the past, especially in light of a progressive memory disorder, and finding ways in which to successfully cope with the present.

The Planning Committee is pleased to announce that Anne Basting, creator of TimeSlips, and principal investigator for the StoryCorps Memory Loss Initiative research project, has agreed to host the plenary session. Please see my interview with Dr. Basting below. She will be joined by Dina Zempsky, Senior Outreach Coordinator for the StoryCorps project. The audience will have the opportunity to listen to people whose stories have been captured on broadcast-quality CD through their participation in this unique and creative effort.

The 8th Annual Forum will also feature five different workshops in the morning and five workshops in the afternoon. Each workshop will be designated as being appropriate for early-stage people or professionals. Family members and friends may choose from either category. Additionally, there will be a workshop in Spanish in both the morning and the afternoon.

The all-day event will be held from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm and includes a continental breakfast and a luncheon. For more information, to register, or to become a Forum exhibitor, please call 646-744-2994, or visit the following web links.
