Dear Friends,
As I reach the beginning of my third year at the New York City
Chapter, I am reminded of a song from the musical Carousel,
You’ll Never Walk Alone. Over the past two years, this song has
taken on a special significance for me. As I consider our devoted
volunteers, who work so hard throughout the year to assure that
the members of our Alzheimer’s community are never alone, I
have come to understand that the Chapter is not alone in this
fight.
When I revisit our achievements, it is also clear that the Chapter’s success would be
impossible without strong community partners. Over the last year, in a true collaboration,
we have served more people, more effectively than ever before and have made an important
difference in the quality of life for those with Alzheimer’s disease, their family members
and their caregivers. Through our growing platform of support, training, education and
outreach programs and services, we – and our community partners – touch every aspect
of their lives. Our 24-hour Helpline number – 1.800.272.3900 – should be at the top of
every speed dial list – because once you call us, you are truly never alone.
With the hard work of our staff, the immense contribution of our volunteers and the
ongoing support of our community partners, we have achieved much success – and rapid
growth. I am now pleased to announce that shortly, the Chapter will move to substantially
larger space, allowing us to increase our capacity for delivering programs and services – and
for creating unique initiatives that are models for other Chapters across the nation.
In the spirit of partnership, I’d like to pause for a moment and recognize some special
people and organizations. Thanks to a generous grant from Forest Pharmaceuticals, Inc.,
our newsletter continues to be bigger and better. This issue, we are launching Ask Reva,
a column written by Reva Hoffman, our Director of Clinical Services, in which she
addresses a “Frequently-Asked Question” from our Helpline.
For the second consecutive year, we were proud to partner with the Auburn Theological
Seminary to sponsor a symposium where religious leaders explored their critical roles
in building awareness of Alzheimer’s within their congregations. I urge you to read the
award-winning sermon written for this Conference by Rabbi Regina Sandler-Phillips,
entitled Wandering in the Wilderness by clicking here.
Finally, we extend our heartfelt thanks and congratulations to the co-chairs of our
"Forget-Me-Not" Gala, Tami and Rick Schneider, on their extraordinary leadership to make
this event a star-studded record-breaker. (You’ll know more about this terrific evening
when you read our special Gala report in the Fall newsletter.)
So, until next time, thank you for your continued support – and your ongoing partnership.
And please remember that the New York City Chapter, together with our partners,
is always here to make sure that you never walk alone.
