I am very pleased to start this report by announcing that the Alzheimer’s Association, New York City Chapter, has met the Standards for Charity Accountability of the Better Business Bureau (BBB) of Metro New York.
The BBB Wise Giving Alliance is a nonprofit organization affiliated with the Council of Better Business Bureaus. The organization collects and distributes information on hundreds of nonprofit organizations throughout the country. The Alliance has developed 20 comprehensive standards for charitable organizations to follow and to help donors make sound giving decisions. The Alzheimer’s Association, New York City Chapter has met these standards and proudly displays the Alliance’s “Seal of Approval,” on our Web site at www. alznyc.org, at the bottom of each web page, and in other Chapter material.
I am pleased to report on several new grants. A $25,000 first-time grant has been received from Lehman Brothers for general operations. General support is very important as it enables us to have the flexibility to direct financial resources where most needed – helping us to quickly respond to ongoing, new and emerging needs of the Alzheimer’s community.
Our Dementia Home Care Aides Training Program has received a grant of $50,000 from the William Randolph Hearst Foundation to cover the cost of four, intensive 43- hour trainings. Our training program, offered twice a year, provides an opportunity for predominantly low-paid minority women, to learn a valuable skill and gain employment, while helping to improve the quality of care for persons with AD who wish to remain in their own homes.
We are very pleased to welcome Myriad Pharmaceuticals, Inc. as a new friend. Myriad will be underwriting the Fall issue of our Newsletter. Our Newsletter is an invaluable resource for the community and reaches close to 50,000 New Yorkers affected by AD.
In keeping with our mission to develop community partnerships, the Chapter has received an award of $38,000 from the State of New York Department of Health, Center for Community Health, Division of Chronic Disease Prevention and Adult Health for a partnership program with Cabrini Medical Center to provide community services in the areas of caregiving, home health care, and respite care with particular focus on the Latino and African-American communities throughout the five boroughs.
And, we are delighted to again recognize and thank Forest Pharmaceuticals, Inc. for continuing their support of our quarterly Newsletter by underwriting our Summer issue and questionnaire. We are pleased to have the support of these special Newsletter sponsors.
In closing, I wish to extend thanks to all our friends who supported our Mothers Day and Fathers Day Campaign. Many of you received this mailing as our Newsletter was going to print. Be sure to visit our Web site at www.alznyc.org and read more about the Campaign and view the “Honor Scroll.” Additionally, we look forward to seeing you at this year’s Memory Walk, on October 22, where we will also recognize special donors to the Campaign on the “Wall of Honor.” If you would like more information about our programs and how you can support the Chapter, please call Carol Berne, Vice President for Leadership Giving, at 646.744.2905 or cberne@alznyc.org.
