On Thursday, May 3, the Alzheimer’s Association, NYC Chapter Junior Committee celebrated its Fifth Anniversary Gala at the gorgeous Manhattan restaurant Sapa. The event brought together a fabulous crowd of three hundred young, philanthropic, civic-minded New Yorkers. Cocktails flowed and snacks were nibbled as guests bid on amazing silent auction items like a private tour of the ESPN campus in Connecticut, VIP passes to the Summer Concert Series on the Today show, and a weekend stay at Susan’s Pleasant Pheasant Farm. Many thanks to Gala Chair Samantha Kane and her whole team—Kim Karpf, Jessica Levine, Tricia Amy and the entire Host Committee—for making this event an incredible success!

The Junior Committee also welcomed a very special guest to the event—Gordon Pinsent, who stars opposite Julie Christie in the new Lionsgate film Away from Her, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and opened to wider audiences on May 4. In the film, Mr. Pinsent plays the husband of a woman who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. When she moves into an assisted living facility, she slowly forgets her husband and falls in love with another man. Mr. Pinsent presented a clip of the film at the event, and it was warmly received.

In other news, two Junior Committee members—Meghann McKale, President, and Kim Rossi, Community Service Chair—recently traveled to Washington, DC for the Alzheimer’s Association’s Public Policy Forum. The three day event included fascinating lectures and symposia and culminated in the truly thrilling experience of lobbying on Capitol Hill for funds for Alzheimer research. Meghann and Kim had the opportunity to tell their personal Alzheimer’s stories to their state representatives, and were also able to sit in on a congressional hearing on AD.

The JC has also gotten back in the swing of volunteering at Hearthstone, an assisted living facility on the Upper West Side. Once a month a small group of JC members visits with residents to play games, paint nails, and even bake! If you are interested in participating in this wonderful program, please contact Kim Rossi at kim.rossi@gmail.com.

The Junior Committee meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 6:45 pm at the Alzheimer’s Association, NYC Chapter headquarters in Manhattan.
