As the year draws to a close, we take this opportunity to thank you for being a partner in our important work. As the number of New Yorkers with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias grows, there has never been a greater need for our services.

We hope that you will consider making a year-end contribution at this time. It is only with your generosity that we are able to expand our programs and sustain their high quality to help the over 200,000 people in New York City who have Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, as well as their families and caregivers.

In 2006, with the help of our friends, we reached many new milestones, which included the following:

  • Presented our Sixth Annual Early Stage Memory Disorders Forum, the only program of its kind in the country for people with Early Stage Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders, their family members, and professionals. A highlight was a dramatic presentation, “To Whom I May Concern,” written and acted by individuals with Early Stage Alzheimer’s, which furthered our goal of using the creative arts to enhance knowledge and public awareness of Alzheimer’s disease;

  • Established an Early Stage Services Department to provide more comprehensive and specialized care to this growing dementia population;

  • Completed our 17th year of providing specialized Dementia Home Care Training, incorporating the latest concepts in effective dementia care, and ensuring quality care for people with Alzheimer’s disease who remain in their homes;

  • Strengthened our Diversity and Outreach Program to the Latino and African-American communities through support groups and community education;

  • Enrolled 2,000 individuals in our Alzheimer’s Association Safe Return® program, building our registry to over 7,500 New Yorkers and providing a critical safety net for people with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias who wander and become lost, locally or far from home;

  • Produced a comprehensive report on residential care as a first step in advocating for quality dementia care for New York City’s nursing home residents;

  • Established an annual Gathering of Remembrance, a multi-faith service for Alzheimer’s caregivers, held in partnership with the HealthCare Chaplaincy;

  • Increased our capacity to serve greater numbers of clients with in-depth services through the addition of a fulltime care consultant for our Clinical Services Department;

  • Refined our network of 145 support groups to ensure that they continue to address the specialized needs of New York City’s highly complex and diverse population, which includes support groups for grandchildren, long-distance caregivers, Spanish speaking caregivers, the gay and lesbian community, adult children and spouses of early onset persons.

These programs, and many others, are only possible with your ongoing support. And, know that 82 cents of every dollar raised goes directly to programs and services.

We look forward to 2007 as a year of even greater achievement as we continue to develop innovative programs and services to better meet the needs of the Alzheimer’s community.

Thank you again for the important role you play in making our work possible. We hope that you will contribute more generously than ever to the Alzheimer’s Association, New York City Chapter this year.
