Memory Walk 2006

The Junior Committee enjoyed a fantastic summer and fall, raising thousands of dollars for Memory Walk 2006, attending a screening of the new film Aurora Borealis, and hosting a swanky fall event at the 79th Street Boat Basin, among other worthwhile adventures.

Late summer got off to a fantastic start with Chapter Events Manager Taryn Lubin guest-bartending at Stone Creek in Murray Hill. Instead of pocketing her tips, she gave every last cent to the Junior Committee fund—and a portion of the proceeds from each drink went into the JC coffers, too! Then, on August 9, the JC had a great turnout and an even better time at Alzheimer’s Awareness Day at Shea, watching the Mets take down the San Diego Padres!

On September 13, JC members turned their September meeting in a movie screening as they gathered to watch Aurora Borealis—a new movie starring Donald Sutherland, who plays a man stricken with Alzheimer’s, and Joshua Jackson, who stars as his troubled grandson.

The key event this fall was the Hudson Hullabaloo, held the evening of September 27 at the 79th Street Boat Basin. $25 earned revelers two complimentary drinks, and they also had the chance to win fantastic raffle prizes such as a $100 day spa gift certificate and a VIP package for First Fridays at the Guggenheim. Also on hand were two professional masseuses to treat partyers to complimentary chair massages. The event raised more than $1,300 for the JC, and four new people signed up to become members!

Most recently, the Junior Committee’s Memory Walk team once again broke all previous records by raising almost $28,000! 44 team members, led by our inspiring cochairs Stephanie Spector and Drew Skelton, gathered on October 22 (sporting fabulous new JC hats) to walk and raise awareness about Alzheimer’s at the Chapter’s most successful Memory Walk to date.

Looking forward, the JC – under the leadership of new events chair Samantha Kane – has already begun plans for its 5th Annual Spring Gala, set to take place on Thursday, April 26, 2007. Be sure to save that date – this gala is going to be our biggest and best yet!

The Junior Committee meets on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 7:00 pm at the Chapter office. For more information on getting involved, please contact me at christy_johnson@post.com.
