Bike New York (BikeNewYork.org) is a non-profit organization that promotes and encourages bicycling and bicycle safety through education, public events, and collaboration with community and government organizations.
The Tour is a 40-mile five borough recreational (not a race) ride through New York City on closed roads. The Tour will be 32 years old this year and attracts 30,000 participants. It is the largest event of its kind in the U.S., and kicks off the spring bicycling season. The TD Bank Five Boro Bike Tour is a rain-or-shine event through mostly flat streets, bridges, highways and parks. The ride heads north through the heart of Manhattan to Central Park and continues on to historic Harlem and the Bronx, returning south along the East River on the FDR Drive. From there it crosses into Queens and then Brooklyn, where cyclists take over the highway before making the thrilling climb up--and down--the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge to Staten Island.
Schedule
Sunday, May 6, 2012 • Rain or shine
6:30 – 7:45 a.m.: All cyclists enter the start lineup through Battery Park.
7:45 – 8:00 a.m.: Opening ceremonies with city officials and others at the start stage.
8:00 – 9:00 a.m.: The ride starts! The front of the Tour travels at 15 mph and the tail at 6 mph. Cyclists who fall behind are given theoption of either boarding SAG (support and gear) vehicles traveling at the tail of the Tour or leaving the Tour as the route permits. Upon reaching Astoria Park, Queens, all cyclists near the head of the Tour are held for about 45 minutes while the NYPD closes oncoming roads to traffic. Cyclists arriving later are not affected, and those near the tail of the Tour are directed to a mandatory shortcut that bypasses Astoria Park and leads to the next rest area.
11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.: Festival at Fort Wadsworth, Staten Island, followed by 3-mile ride to finish at the Staten Island Ferry.
