Dear Friends of the Chapter:
“I cannot say enough about the Chapter, and the wonderful programs I
have taken advantage of. It goes without saying that the Chapter staff
who helped me are extraordinary and have made a significant difference
in my life. They have made it possible for me to continue being a caregiver
for my husband.”
Many of you reading this letter have been touched by Alzheimer’s disease and depend
upon the NYC Chapter for help. Others have referred friends, colleagues and family
members so that they do not have to face this devastating disease alone. As the caregiver
quoted above has so eloquently expressed, we are here for you – to provide
counsel, offer support and help you manage the challenges of Alzheimer’s disease.
As the year comes to a close, and we launch our Year-End Campaign, we hope you will
generously lend your support. Our goal this year is $500,000, which we can only reach
with your generosity. Your gift makes possible our free-of-charge programs and ensures
that all New Yorkers who need our help receive care and support. No one is turned
away.
This past year, your support made it possible for us to:
- Respond to 8,424 callers to our 24-hour Helpline and counsel 1,311
individuals and families through our Care Consultation services, an increase
from 2010 of 27.6% and 9.3% respectively.
- Enroll 1,803 additional New Yorkers in our lifesaving MedicAlert® +
Alzheimer’s Association Safe Return® program for wanderers, building the
New York City registry to over 16,200 -- the largest in the
country.
- Enhance our Physician Outreach program by piloting a Rapid Referral system
which links dementia patients and their families directly to the Chapter, helping
to ensure quick access to vital Chapter support.
- Award $2.6 million in Alzheimer’s Association grants to 15 talented scientists
who work in New York City laboratories.
- Host our first Early Stage Gathering, offering persons with early-stage memory disorders a
forum to share thoughts and experiences and to learn more from each other about how
life with mild cognitive impairment or dementia can be lived to the fullest.
- Publish and launch ADvancing CareTM, a monthly newsletter for staff and family members of
nursing homes and other residential care settings, designed to improve care for residents
with dementia.
- Continue our expansion into new and diverse communities with the publication of “Si no
es Alzheimer, ¿Que Podria Ser?” (When it’s not Alzheimer’s?); adding a Chinese care consultant,
hosting seminars for African American physicians and expanding into the Russian
community.
Thank you for supporting our Year-End Campaign and making our work possible. We know these
are difficult economic times and deeply appreciate that you include us among your charitable
priorities. With your support we can reach our $500,000 goal and continue to help those in need.
With best wishes for a peaceful and productive New Year.
Sincerely,
Jeffery N. Jones Co-Chair
Heath B. McLendon Co-Chair
