A Record Year for the Junior Committee
F
or the members of the Junior Committee (JC),
it’s personal. Nearly every member of the JC has
been affected in some way by Alzheimer’s disease,
and many of us have served as caregivers. These collective
experiences inform and shape the work we do to raise
awareness and funds in the fight against Alzheimer’s — and
are the reasons why we work as hard as we do!
Accordingly, 2009 was a record year for the Junior
Committee. Over the last twelve months, we have hosted
grander events, contributed more time and energy, and
raised more money than ever before. As a result, this year
we were able to allocate $115,000 directly to research, in
addition to $120,000 that funded three programs at the
New York City Chapter. The majority of this funding will go toward the creation of two new positions at the NYC
Chapter: a MedicAlert and Safe Return Associate who
will manage enrollment in the program, and a Physician
Outreach Manager, who will educate local health care
professionals about the ways in which the Alzheimer’s
Association can help patients and their families managing
the various challenges of dementia. We will also be
contributing toward the funding of the Chapter’s efforts to
honor the hundreds of amazing volunteers who donated
over 17,000 hours of service to the Chapter in 2009.
In the upcoming year, the JC plans to increase our
presence throughout NYC and our focus on public
affairs. Our dynamic group is starting to plan for the
JC’s annual fundraising gala — Collective Consciousness.
Complete with a fabulous silent auction, celebrity host
and live music — it’s sure to be a smashing success! Also
on tap for 2010 are monthly visits to long-term care
facilities and trips to Albany, NY, and Washington, DC,
where JC members will meet with representatives to raise
awareness about Alzheimer’s disease. In addition to our
historically successful events, we are in the development
stages of organizing new initiatives to further engage our
peers — stay tuned!
Finally, we are pleased to announce that we have
recruited new members to our JC leadership. Our
advocacy program is now led by Julie Scherr and Marielle
Mindlin, who serve as committee chairs. The JC would
also like to welcome our fi rst full-time coordinator,
Erica Goldberg. We are very much looking forward to
working with these dedicated individuals to ensure that
the upcoming year will be even more successful than the
last.
