Team Run2Remember

A
lways on the lookout for new ways to fundraise and advocate, the Junior Committee pinpointed the ING New York City Marathon years ago as a prime opportunity for the Chapter to extend its reach and garner new supporters. After years of concentrated effort, we were finally selected to be a participating charity in the 2009 marathon — and 11 of our active Junior Committee members ran to support us. The official team — Team Run2Remember — had a total of 55 runners from all over the country and from all different walks of life. They each ran to honor a friend, relative, or acquaintance who has been afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease. Involvement in the team has allowed runners to explore volunteerism, fundraising, and personal achievement, creating a tremendously fulfilling and unique experience for all involved.

Junior Committee runners in particular were given the opportunity to connect with the cause in a new way and to deepen their dedication to making a difference. Numerous Committee members were first-time marathoners, but two members were highly trained and experienced runners and stepped up to — pardon the pun — really go the extra mile. Brian Hsia and Jeff LeBlanc, acting Treasurer of the Junior Committee, teamed up to become Team Run2Remember’s coaches, which is no small job. The two put in countless volunteer hours working to train and lead runners, educate the team about Alzheimer’s disease, and attend meetings with Chapter staff.

The success of Team Run2Remember is due to the support and dedication of all of our fabulous runners, but Junior Committee involvement laid the necessary groundwork and allowed us to reach new heights — the marathon program raised over $337,000 for the chapter this year. We are excited for the program to grow and prosper in the future.
