W e at the Alzheimer’s
Association, NYC
Chapter extend a
big THANK YOU to the 208
Volunteers who made Memory
Walk 2009 a success!
Volunteers gave their time and
energy not only on the day of the
walk, but in the weeks leading
up to the walk. Volunteers were
busy making phone calls, passing
out flyers, putting up posters,
polishing jewelry, stuffing goody
bags, putting together registration
booklets, and various other
projects. Just the week before the
walk, we saw 24 volunteers giving
a combined 128 hours of service.
The morning of Memory Walk, while many people
were still at home in their beds, volunteers began arriving
at Riverside Park at 5am to help set up. As walkers
approached the 97th Street entrance, they were met by
friendly greeters and checked in at the registration table. As
they made their way towards the promenade — whether
they stopped to get a bandana for their dog at the Doggie
Dugout, checked in at the Team Captain table, grabbed a
bite to eat at the Giant Steps Food Court, did sand art at
the Kidz Korner, wrote a message on the Memory Wall, or
stopped at any of the various Chapter tables — they were
helped by volunteers. Once the walk was over and the
crowd dispersed, volunteers stuck around to help clean up
— some working until 5:30 p.m. to unload our supplies at
the Chapter office.
All said and done, there were a total of 208 Volunteers,
(184 day-of and 24 pre-event), giving 1,008 hours of service
at an estimated value of $26,389! (Volunteer administration
industry standard of volunteer time $ value = $26.18 per
hour, www.independentsector.org.) We simply could
not do the work that we do without our volunteers.
As little as 1 hour of your time can make a difference.
