Volunteers Support Our Programs
The following is a brief summary of the recent
happenings in each of our outreach programs.
African-American Outreach Program
The contribution of volunteers to the African-American
Outreach program has been extremely valuable and varied.
Volunteers have contributed to African-American outreach
through their participation in training for the Speaker’s
Bureau.
In the last quarter we have had an increasing need
for brochures to be provided for presentations that were
made to approximately 25 senior centers; volunteers were
essential in providing the necessary manpower in getting
the brochures out.
Their participation in health fairs, with the distribution
of literature, in addition to their knowledge about the
disease and the services of the Association was an added
demonstration of their value. There has been an ongoing
involvement of volunteers as we seek to reach out to beauty
parlors and barber shops in Harlem and other African-
American communities. One of the volunteers attended
the Support Group Leader training and will begin to lead a
group at Abyssinian Baptist Church in the near future.
African-American Outreach is interested in hearing from you.

Chinese Outreach Program
We had a busy summer in 2009. During the months of
July to September, 2009, we reached out to 2,836 people
in the Chinese community. This included the community
presentations and health fairs. I would not have been able
to carry out my duties without the help of volunteers.
With the help of volunteers, we were able to distribute
materials, educate participants about Alzheimer’s disease,
and provide emotional support for caregivers.
Volunteers are crucial to the Chinese Outreach
Program. In addition to helping me at health fairs, they
can be helpful with educating others. I believe we can
train Chinese volunteers to conduct presentations in the
Chinese language.

Latino Outreach Program
The Alzheimer’s Association, NYC Chapter has been providing services to the Latino/Hispanic community since
the late 1990’s. In continuation of this effort, the Chapter
joined the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month with a
special educational event on October 8, 2009.
Our event was titled: Explorando Alzheimer Dentro
de la Comunidad Hispana (Exploring Alzheimer’s Disease
within the Hispanic Community). The Chapter President
and CEO, Lou-Ellen Barkan, welcomed the participants.
The speakers included Jose Luchsinger, MD from Columbia
University, who presented information about Alzheimer’s
disease and research as it relates to the Hispanic community.
Our second presenter was Jaime Ortega, movement therapist,
who spoke about stress reduction and demonstrated specific
stress reduction techniques. We were also privileged to be
joined by Lilliam Barrios-Paoli, Commissioner of the New
York City Department for the Aging.
The program was very well received by the audience of
approximately 50 participants, made up of family caregivers
and previously trained home health aides.
The success of this celebration was in large part a result
of the behind the scenes work of volunteers and staff who
helped with mailing invitations, registration, set-up and so
much more.
