Fundraising is relationship building: as fundraisers, it is important for us to get to know our friends and supporters. Conversely, those of our supporters who have personally been affected by Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia know us well. The Chapter is an invaluable safety net for those whose lives have forever been impacted by dementia. Our help may begin with a call of reassurance from our 24-hour Helpline staff. It may include one-on-one counseling by one of our professional social work care consultants. A family may attend our twoday Family Caregiver Workshop to learn skills to cope with the complexity of caring for a family member with Alzheimer’s disease. In any case, all of our programs and services are provided without charge.

I often meet with a family member who wants to “give back.” The offers of support range from donation of stock, to an annual gift of $25, to naming a room for a loved one in posterity. Supporters also include the Chapter in their estate plans. Every one of these gifts is a welcome and meaningful contribution to the Chapter and to the Association.

I would like to introduce you to Alice Provan, a savvy New York City business woman who died at the age of 92 and left the New York City Chapter a most significant gift in her will. Alice knew how much she was leaving us, but what Alice did not know was the deeply felt impact this gift would have on the Chapter in today’s economic environment.

It is due to Alice’s thoughtful and generous gift that the Chapter was able to sustain its programs and staff this year, and even to embark on new initiatives. While other NYC charities had staff reductions and program reductions, we did not. It was Alice’s forethought and desire to help the Chapter support our community that made the difference for us this year.

Please contact me if you would like more information on making a gift to the Chapter or to the Alzheimer’s Association. Gifts for general support fund the full mission of the Association — research, caregiving and advocacy. I am also pleased to work with you on funding a program or service at the Chapter. I can be reached at 646-744-2905 or by e-mail at cberne@alz.org. Thank you for your support. We could not do our work without you.
