Page outline

People with AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) can develop cognitive impairment, primarily in the later stages of the illness. AIDS is caused by the presence of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus), which attacks an individual’s immune system. The overall effect created causes one to be much more susceptible to infections or diseases. Thus, HIV-associated dementia (HAD) can be caused by either a) the direct impact of HIV on the brain itself, or b) infections that take advantage of the already-weakened immune system.

Symptoms

The possible symptoms of early stage HIV-associated dementia (HAD) may include:

  • Forgetfulness
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Slowed thinking
  • Longer time needed to complete complicated tasks
  • Irritability
  • Unsteady gait (walk)
  • Poor hand coordination and change in writing
  • Depression

Treatment

There is currently no standard treatment for HIV-related dementia. However, the best therapies available consist of anti-HIV drugs. Other medications may assist in easing the symptoms of HIV dementia. These include anti-psychotics, anti-depressants, anxiolytics, psychostimulants, anti-manics and anti-convulsants.
