The Manhattan HIV Brain Bank is an observational, non-interventional research study focusing on the effects of HIV and its treatment on the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). A major focus of the research is on HIV-Associated Dementia and related conditions.
The study is enrolling HIV positive participants interested in being organ donors for the purposes of research. Upon enrollment, participants consent to post-mortem examination (autopsy) and brain/spinal cord donation at the time of death.
Participants receive periodic neurological, neuropsychological, and psychiatric evaluations. Additionally, blood and urine samples are taken for laboratory tests and storage.
The Manhattan HIV Brain Bank is part of the National NeuroAIDS Tissue Consortium and is funded by the National Institutes of Health.
